SLAM TRIES WITH LONG SUITS
As shown throughout these pages, there are many ways to make a slam
try with a hand that contains a six or seven-card suit. A summary
follows. First, major suits:
-- With a balanced hand and strong suit, use Jacoby and raise to
game:
Opener Responder
2NT 3D
3H 4H
Opener Responder
2NT 3H
3S 4S
-- With a balanced hand and weak heart suit, use Stayman and then
bid 4H if partner bids spades:
Opener Responder
2NT 3C
3S 4H
If opener bids 3D, just bid the suit twice. Opener won't know much
about the hand except that it has slam potential, because you might
have four spades. Don't jump to 4H over 3D with slam interest,
because that shows a weakish 4-6 hand in the majors:
Opener Responder
2NT 3C
3D 3H (4H would be a sign-off)
3NT 4H - slam interest
-- With weakish spades, use Stayman:
Opener Responder
2NT 3C
3D 3S (4S would be a sign-off)
3NT 4S (may be balanced or not)
If opener bids 3H in response to Stayman, then responder can
differentiate between a balanced and unbalanced hand:
Opener Responder
2NT 3C
3H 4S - balanced, slam try
Opener Responder
2NT 3C
3H 3S
3NT 4S - unbalanced, slam try
Of course opener won't know immediately whether responder is
interested in slam or not when he follows up Stayman with a 3H or
3S bid. He just shows his hand and waits to hear more.
-- With an unbalanced hand and heart suit, use UHC:
Opener Responder
2NT 3D
3H 3S - UHC
3NT 4H - slam try, unbalanced hand
Responder must have had slam in mind. Opener will probably pass,
in view of his lack of heart support.
In all of the above sequences, responder obviously could have used
Texas if not interested in slam.
Remember, a jump to 4H or 4S over a 3D response to Stayman is a
sign-off, showing a weak 6-4 major suit hand.
Now for the minors:
-- With clubs and a balanced hand, transfer to clubs and then bid
4NT:
Opener Responder
2NT 3S
3NT/4C 4NT
-- With clubs and an unbalanced hand, bid 3C and then 4C:
Opener Responder
2NT 3C
Any 4C - natural, slam try
-- With diamonds, balanced or unbalanced, bid 3C and then 4D (since
the transfer bid of 3NT is not forcing).
